39th Post!

One of my favorite subjects to draw and paint are geisha girls (and samurai). A couple weeks ago I sketched this out and finally got around to finishing it over the Christmas holiday. not very Christmas-y I know.

here's the finished oil painting on 12x16 illustration board.
and the steps...
Sketched in Photoshop (and after not saving for awhile, got this message). Ugh! photoshop rarely crashes on me, so I've gotten out of the habit of saving every few minutes. sigh. luckily I did a 'print screen' before it totally died on me, so I was able to still use the low res image to work from.
I then printed out the image and using graphite transfer paper put it onto the pre-gessoed illustration board. (I put the layers of gesso on pretty thick to give it a nice painterly feel).
Then I started painting...
I didn't take too many photos of the progess at this stage...sorry :).
and the finished photo here:

36th Post!

Couple new things..

first is when you watch 'Up' then think it's been a while since you've drawn DC's Death :)
9x12 bristol paper and painted with water soluble oils and acrylic.

And this is the first blank sketch cover I've tried in a long time (last time the cover stock was so terrible I gave up on drawing on them for a while).
Copic Markers and white acrylic here and there.

35th Post!

been fooling around with water soluble oil paints lately (mixed with acrylics)...they dry so much faster than standard oil paint. I'm enjoying them so far. here's a couple recent ones.

first up...rookie mistake :)

and then a Psylocke (from Marvel comics).

nothing thanksgiving related this time...oh well. hope you like anyways :)

oh, and don't forget to order the graphic novel I drew 'The Stereotypical Freaks' from Animal Media Group. You can order the book from their website now: Animal Media Group order page

34st Post!

Redheads are fun to draw :)

here's a couple recent ones...first up is Marvel's Goblin Queen. It's always tough being the queen of the goblins when you're dressed like that :)
and next up is DC's Poison Ivy (and a couple friends.)
Both pieces were colored with copic markers (and some paint for the background colors).

30th Post!

Since it's getting near Halloween and because of the start of the 3rd season of The Walking Dead on AMC, I've got zombies on the brain. :)

here's the finished results with copic markers...

Now back to the beginning with the initial sketch in Photoshop...kind of knew what I wanted, so just a quick rough sketch.

Then I cleaned it up in Photoshop with a tighter second pass

Which I then printed out and lightboxed onto 9x12 bristol and then finished with col-erase pencils.

There might be a few more zombie pinup girls showing up  before the end of the month...we'll see.

27th Post!

26th Post!

More Cowgirl art...

This is a remake of sorts of an earlier piece I posted with her and a pull toy type horse. Which seemed fun, but I really wanted to draw more horses, so...this is the updated image.

And here's a panel from the in-progress comic with her. I'll be posting more info on this book as I get it completed, but for now here's a little preview...

and now a watercolor piece featuring another character from the story (and a variation on her design that I posted a couple weeks ago...clearly it wasn't skimpy enough for me to draw ;))

First up, the digital sketch (which I may digitally color someday just to see how it turns out).
 then col-erase pencils...

finally, watercolors (and some white acrylic paint here and there.)
Hope you enjoy!

25th Post!

The Stereotypical Freaks...

This is what I spent a lot of 2011 and 2012 working on. The Stereotypical Freaks is a 140 page graphic novel written by Howard Shapiro and drawn by me, with lettering by Ed Brisson.

It will be available Nov. 14th at amazon.com and other book shops/comic shops.

It's a story about 4 high school students that form a band to take part in their school's Battle of the Bands. The story actually goes beyond that as one of the characters gets some news that changes everyone's lives. (I really enjoyed reading the story as I worked on it...so if nothing else, pick it up because it's a great read.)

Here's the cover image (with and without logo. Drawn and colored by me.)

The following are a few examples of pages from the book.

So there's a peek at the story and art (and lettering!) for the book.

You can pre-order it on Amazon.com right now.

(Oh, and if you do pre-order it you'll get a limited edition poster and bookmark...so if you do pre-order, send an email to: hockeyplayer4life@gmail.com  and let them know you pre-ordered and they'll get you taken care of :))

Hope you enjoy the book when it comes out...it's the largest comics related project I've worked on to date and it was a ton of fun.
